2006年是北京2008年奥运会筹办工作的关键之年、攻坚之年，如何学习世界各国举办奥运会的成功经验，整合各种资源，调动一切积极因素，为北京办好奥运会做出更为充分的准备，是社会各界共同关注的重点话题之一。
历届奥林匹克运动会都对举办城市的经济、文化、社会生活等等方面产生了深远的影响。为了在更高层面和更广泛的范围内研究和探讨奥林匹克运动与城市发展的相互关系，尤其是2008年奥运会与北京发展的关系，第29届奥林匹克运动会组织委员会、中国人民大学、决定于2006年7月9日在北京召开“奥林匹克与文化创意产业发展——北京2008奥运国际论坛 2006 大会”。
